Reflection

When I got elected as Alpha Phi President I wanted to make the most of out my experience I knew one of the best ways to do that was by going through the leadership engagement center and using this as my edge project. The amount of work and analysis that the edge program provides was a perfect way to continuely check on how I was doing as President. The steps I took to complete my project was just to write down all the experiences and the events I helped with. My goals were to streamline communication and to make sure every sister had a place in our chapter and I feel as though me and my excutive counsel did just that. We created a website and sent out emails twice a week. We also utiized apps like Facebook and Groupme to get the most information out to the girls in Alpha Phi effectivly. Me and my exectuive also increaed the amount of sisterhood activites we held weekly and the improved the quality of the events we had. A few examples were paintballing, crafting nights, game nights, bowling, and homework/movie nights. By providing girls oppurtunities to hang out together we increased the feeling of sisterhood. Girls felt like they were connected to the chapter and that they had the friendship they need and were looking for. Through being President it help me build skills that will improve my personal and professional life, those skills include: Communication Budgeting Event planning Management of a large number of people Emotional support Goal setting Networking and leadership techniques. The hardest skill for me to learn was managing a large budget. In Alpha Phi we have around 50,000 dollars in dues that have to be budgeted and some has to go into savings. Learning how to use the billing system and keep track of the money being spent was difficult but I am grateful for it to put on resumes and have that skill. A huge thing I learned about leadership from being President of Alpha Phi was that just because people don’t see the world the same way as you it doesn’t mean they are wrong. I learned a lot of patience and understanding for different people and the different ways they live their life. EDGE stands for education designed to give experience. Because I am graduating soon it means I already have experience in something that can help me get a job in the future. I definitely see the value in this because now every student graduating from SUU can say they either did a project, study aboard, or something that will give them a leg up when they are looking for jobs. This is such a great resume and person builder. I’m grateful for the opportunities brought to me through EDGE and Southern Utah University.
