So Why Join a Sorority Anyway?

Hi, so here is the thing it has come to my attention the media and rumors or whatever you want to call it portrays sororities as way different than they actually are. Society and the media portrays sororities as dumb blonde girls who are constantly partying and/or full on fighting with any other sorority girl who even looks at her man. Ask any sorority girl on campus and they will tell you that is not what being in a sorority is but the question of the day is what is it like being in a sorority.

So this post is all about what actually being in a sorority is like. I want to break this up into what I think are 3 crucial things that make up a sorority experience.

1. Values and Ceremonies.

2. Sisterhood.

3. Events and Activites.

1. Values and Ceremonies are such a big part of being in a sorority if you make that an imporantance in your life. My sorority is Alpha Phi, and just like anything else in life you get out of Alpha Phi what you put into it. Alpha Phi has 6 values (leadership, loyalty, sisterhood, scholarship, service, and character development.) These values are a integral part of being in a sorority. Half the reason you get selected to join a sorority is because you have the potential to live up to these values. The ceremonies tie us to our past sister and teach the importance of living up to our values. The alpha phi ritual hasnt changed from its original one performed in 1872 written by 2 of our origninal founders. Every girl who has joined alpha phi has gone through all the same ceremonies which is cool to think about, everyones sorority experience will be different but the rituals they saw are the same. No unforuntately we dont sacrafice a virgin or a lamb, or we dont make people drink an obsene amount of alcohol like portrayed in the movies but there is alot of meaningful symbolism which is cool, you do make promises and say you will live your life a certain way but nothing to crazy.

2. Sisterhood- literally my favorite memories of alpha phi include spending time with my sisters, our deep talks, fun late nights and just being crazy in a boy and drama free enviroment. Its nice haivng riends but having sisters is different you have a deeper bond than just friendship or in simple terms girls have to like you because you are sisters( haha kidding kind of) I have become close to so many girls that I know I would not have if it wasnt for alpha phi bringing us together. it is really cool to realize the similarities 2 seemingly very different girls if they would just take the time to get to know each other. So definitely a cool part of a sorority

3. Events and Activities - So being in a sorority is basicallly a planned social calendar which is nice. at least twice a week I have a planned activity and weeks like recruitment and philanthropy every single day is planned out for you including your outfit. In additon to that there is formals and mixers and socials with different groups on campus. PLUS there are planned homework, sleepover and movie nights. it keeps you busy and invloved in the funnest way possible.
